Atleast one hour prior to the procedure:
- EMLA® must be applied only on clean, dry, unbroken skin that is free of rash and
infection. Anyone with atopic dermatitis or other skin problems should consult a physician before using
EMLA®.
- Cleanse the underarm area of persperation and deoderant.
- Apply a thick layer of EMLA® cream to the underarm area.
- Cover the area with one or two Tegaderm strips or plastic wrap and tape to ensure a
secure seal free of air bubbles.
- Total occlusion of EMLA® cream is mandatory to ensure absorption and efficacy.
- For best results, lie down with arm raised above the head to avoid perspiring or movement of the
product.
- It is also helpful to place a dry face cloth over the plastic wrap to help keep it from moving.
- Leave the occlusive dressing on until you are ready to start the procedure. Remove the cream by wiping
it from the area
- The analgesic effect of EMLA® will last for at least two hours after removal. However,
for best results, begin the procedure within 10 to 15 minutes of removing the airtight dressing and wiping
the cream from the area.
- The cream and dressing may remain in place up to five hours without loss of anesthetic effect.
