Infection Control Contract
Mandatory Infection Control Procedures
The following procedures must be followed to remain a member in good standing with COPE National.
- Sterilization of instruments using one or more of the following:
- Steam under pressure (autoclave)
Steam under pressure is the most effective and widely used form of heat sterilization used today. Sterilization temperature is 121 degrees Centigrade, (250 F) for 20 minutes or through the entire exposure time as recommended by the manufacturers instructions.
- Dry heat oven
The most common temperatures used are 162.8 C (320 F) for 120 minutes, and 170 C (338 F) for 60 minutes, according to manufacturers instructions.
(Note - beaded units are not an acceptable means to achieve verifiable sterilization.)
Monthly biological spore testing is essential to prove efficiency of your sterilizer. Bacillus Stearothermophilus spores are used to test steam autoclaves. Bacillus Subtilis spores are used to test dry heat sterilizers.
Use of one of the following appropriate sterilization packaging.
- Clear plastic roll
- Paper / Plastic Pouches
- Paper Pouches
- Doubled layer Cotton Fabric
Single use sterile disposable needles only.
It is essential to dispose of biohazard waste, according to local board of health requirements.
Wearing surgical gloves (latex or vinyl) during treatment.
Instrument cleaning methods:
- Manual - useage according to Canada Health Guidelines.
- Ultrasonic cleaner
Use of recommended surface cleaning solutions, (e.g. 10% bleach).
